Bali’s Temple

Bali has an estimated 20.000 temples found in villages, seashores, rice fields and in the mountains. All “Pura” (temple) are oriented from “kaja” (mountain) direction to “kelod” (ocean) with secondary shrines located in the “kangin” (sunrise) direction. Each Balinese village has three primary temples. The Pura Puseh (temple of origin) is dedicated to Wisnu and used to worship the village founders; always found in the kaja-(at the end of the village or northern part of the village).

The “Pura Desa” (town temple) is dedicated to Brahma and used for ceremonies involving the living – found in the middle of town.

The “Pura Dalem” (temple of death) is dedicated to Shiva and used worship deities of death – located in the “kelod” end. Temple courtyards have several individual “merus” (shrines) dedicated to family clans, village social organizations and nature spirits.

In additional every family has a home temple former rajadoms keep royal temples to honor their deified ancestors and the entire population shares a number of national temples located at the sea (Pura Tanah Lot or Uluwatu), in the mountains (Pura Besakih) and the low lands (Pura Taman Ayun Mengwi). Bali has the highest temple capital ration on the planet.

Pura Ulun Danu

The Bratan Lake is an immense crater lake, its water also being turbid and deep is holy to the Balinese people. The air there is colder than the south or in the north.

The Ulun Danu temple has been built at the south bank of the lake; it is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of the lake. She provides the water for the rice plantations. The temple is located along a gorgeous garden park. Some of the holy shrines are built over the water and look like a float on the lake. The large shrines with several floors can be distinguished from far away. It’s not surprising that this sea side lake temple is among the favorite themes you find on postcards on Bali.

Pura Luhur Uluwatu

Located at Pecatu village on the southern most point of Badung Regency highland about 32 km from Denpasar on Uluwatu area there is Luhur Uluwatu Temple which was built by Empu Kuturan in the 11 century and than as a place chosen by

Ida Pedanda Sakti Wawu Rauh to achieve “Moksa” (the oneness with God) and it is one of the Sad Kayangan Temple (public temple) for whole Hindu followers in Bali. Panorama of rock hills that sharply drop into vast ocean is very interesting particularly during sunset moments. Kecak Dance is often performed around the temple and hundred of monkeys inhabit the surrounding forest.

Pura Besakih

Besakih Temple situated at Besakih village, Rendang District, Karangasem Regency about 1000 meter over the sea level. Besakih Temple is built on the south-west slope of Mount Agung. The Besakih Temple complex consists of 18 temples and a large number of shrines to worship the ancestor’s spirits. Besakih Temple is the “Mother Temple” and the biggest temple complex on Bali.

With in the temple complex, the paramount sanctuary is the Pura Penataran Agung which rears its lofty meru on a high bank terraces. Steps ascend in along perspective to the austere split gate. Inside the main courtyard stands the three seated shrine enthroning the Trisakti, the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Siwa. Religiously oneness is the symbolized in the Padmasana in Pura Penataran Agung, dedicated to Sang Hyang Widhi – the supreme god.

The 18 meter high statue was designed in 1987 by Ir.Gomuda – an architect and a lecture in the faculty of technical and engineering faculty of Udayana University and was built by I Wayan Winten, a famous artist from Gianyar Regency.
The statue depicts an episode of the Mahabrata (a Hindu epic) in which the princess of Astina – the five Pandawa leads (Panca Pandawa) and the one hundred Korawa boys (Satus Korawa) go to school Bima symbolizes the struggle to experience live ad God gift. The dragon in the story represents the bonds of world comfort and pleasure. The ocean is the up and down of life. In this narrative Bima is strong and stands firm in his resolve to carry out his prescribed duty (dharma) toward his teacher, as a good and obedient student should. Because of his strong faith, Biwa was not diverted by the temptations of material life. The story of Bima goes on and on, but we will take our leave of it here.

Pura Tanah Lot

This temple was built in the 16 century by a priest Pedanda Wawu Rauh or Danghyang Nirartha from Majapahit Kingdom in Java. Near this temple there are several small and big shrines – the biggest one is Pekedungan Temple. There is also spring considered sacred not far from the temple. Tanah Lot is 12 km from Tabanan Regency in Braban village. When the tide is low the people can walk to the temple – it looks like a floating one if the tide is high. There are many caves under the temple complex inhabited by the peaceful sea snakes which has white and black stripes. Tanah Lot is one of the most famous places on Bali to watch a wonderful sunset.
