You probably never heard of Blanjong Inscription. Yes, compared to other popular and famous tourist attractions in Bali, Blanjong Inscription is quite less famous. The location is fairly at strategic points of Sanur, yet it is a more isolated, tucked away location. To be precise, it is located at Blanjong Hamlet, Sanur Kauh Village, Denpasar Bali. About 20 minutes from Ngurah Rai Denpasar Airport, Bali.

This pillar-shaped inscription is pretty tall, with a height of 177 cm and a diameter of 62 cm. However, due to its location which is below the soil surface, the inscription seems located inside the well when viewed from the outside. Though it is less popular, Blanjong Inscription contains the oldest record of Bali Island. This inscription mentioned "Walidwipa", another name for Bali Island. The year engraved is 835 Caka or 913 AD, this inscription was made during the reign of Raja Sri Kesari Warmaweda in Bali.

The inscription is unique since it used two kinds of language, Ancient Bali (Pra-Nagari) and Sanskrit by Kawi's writing. It stated, in Bahasa Indonesia, "The year is 835 Caka, within the month of Phalguna, King Sri Kesari who ruled all over Sanghadwala, had defeated his adversary in Gurun and Swal. This shall be known forever."

Known also as a Victory Milestone, the Inscription is placed in a glass cabinet to prevent damage. Although less popular, some tourists visit to see this inscription. To go there, there is a footpath about 5 feet among the shade of plants. Belanjong Inscription is categorized as a national cultural heritage and protected by Law No. 5 of 1992 as the Sanctuary of Historical and Archeological Bali Province.

Curiously the scripts and languages are mixed up from what is considered the norm and have only partly been deciphered, but bear the name of Sri Kesari Warmadewa believed to be Bali's first king, and seems to refer to military or trade connections possibly with Nusa Penida or even Maluku. However, even if you are a scholar of ancient script and language, the inscriptions are mostly covered by ceremonial cloth, and the entire pillar is enclosed in a wood and dust-smeared glass structure that obscures it further. The pillar is not so easy to locate as the only marker is in Indonesian-look for the sign which reads "Cagar Budaya Prasasti Blanjong". To the left, as you face Belanjong Temple Jalan Danau Poso, Sanur, a short alleyway leads to the site bounded by a stone wall and metal gate.
