Lempuyang Luhur Temple is the oldest temple on Bali Island and the most revered temple in Bali, Indonesia. The temple is well known as the heaven gate in Bali as the picturesque panorama offered with Mount Agung as the background is a collection of several temples along the hiking path to the summit. The highest temple is about 1175 meters above sea level, located at Mount Lempuyang, belonging to Bunutan Village, district of Abang, Karangasem Regency, about 10 km from Amblapura City, the capital city of Karangasem Regency. The distance from Denpasar Airport to Lempuyang Luhur Temples is about 90 km and will take about 2,5 hours by car. Adventurous (and reasonably fit) travelers may hike up to the top temple, which is a four-hour round-trip in total. Along the way, visitors will pass six other temples and can see beautiful vistas before finally arriving at Pura Lempuyang Luhur. Locals believe one must never complain on the way up. If one complains, they will not make it to the top. Those who make it to the top are rewarded with a peaceful sanctuary and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains such as Mount Agung.

The next destination will be Tirga Gangga, one of the water palaces in Bali, located at Ababi Village, belonging to Karangasem Regency, which takes about 30 minutes from Lempuyang Temple. Tirta Gangga is a convenient stopover along tour itineraries to Bali's eastern region. Its main entrance and large parking area are easily spotted from the main Amlapura Road. The site is open to the public and a small entrance fee applies which goes towards maintenance. The former royal palace of Tirta Gangga means that the water in the Palace came from the Gangga River as the Hindu holy river has tiered fountains, tropical gardens, and carvings of mystical creatures that spout water into bathing pools. Just outside the palace area, the lush rice paddies in the northeast of Bali are very stunning. The gardens of the Bali water palace in Tirtagangga were designed and constructed in 1948 by Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem (1887 - 1966), who was the last Raja (King) of Karangasem. Tirta Gangga covers an area of about 1,2 ha and consists of three separate complexes each with ponds and many sculptures. The complex on the lowest level has two large ponds and a water tower. At the second complex (middle level) of the Bali water palace are the swimming pools. The third level houses the main complex with the country home of the former Raja. At the upper location is the temple with holy spring water, where the local people usually do praying and take holy water to bring home for the ceremony.

The other water palace is Taman Ujung about 10 km from Tirta Gangga passing through Amblapura City located at Tumbu village, where the charming Karangasem countryside takes over the view. Taman Ujung was constructed by the late King of Karangasem, I Gusti Bagus Djelantik that reigned from 1909 until 1945. It was built to welcome and serve visiting dignitaries and kings from neighboring countries, besides for the pleasure of the king and his royal family. Loosely translated to "the garden on the far end", Taman Ujung is unique with old omissions and beautiful fish ponds that surround its premises, while keeping the high-value history of the empire of Karangasem in East Bali. The architecture is a blend of several cultures: a western style was implemented for the gazebo, the arches are Middle Eastern, and the plentiful detailed carvings are Balinese.
